The city is silent – but its stories are alive, according to the motto of the night watchman in Leipzig.
“Before the electric light banishes the darkness, I want to tell you what it was like in Leipzig’s dark alleys in the olden days. For centuries, my family has watched over Leipzig’s nights – now it’s my turn to tell tales of bygone days.”
When these words are spoken in the evening twilight at Barthels Hof, a truly unique journey through the historic city of Leipzig begins. The night watchman's lamp is lit, and the night watchman on duty leads a full-hour tour along evocative paths, past historic façades, through atmospheric alleys, and by some of the most beautiful sights in Leipzig's Old Town.
The hustle and bustle of the day has subsided, and now the past comes to life. Dressed in period attire, the night watchman recounts stories from bygone eras, mysterious events, and tales of famous Leipzig figures with wit and charm. You'll hear stories about poet laureates, ambitious mayors, and the lives of ordinary people. Little anecdotes, amusing legends, and a few exciting secrets from the old Leipzig make the guided tour with the Leipzig night watchman an unforgettable experience. Your guide will also tell you stories about life in the distant Middle Ages, the dangers of the night in those days, and the quirky customs of those bygone times.
We will start on time. If possible, please arrive at the meeting point, Barthels Hof / Innenhof (entrance from 1 Hainstraße), 10 minutes before the tour is scheduled to begin.
