What you can expect
Experience one of Ladakh’s most beautiful and remote trekking adventures – the Rumtse to Tsomoriri Lake Trek. This 9-day journey starts in Leh and takes you through dramatic high-altitude landscapes, ancient monasteries, turquoise lakes, high mountain passes, and the nomadic settlements of the Changthang Plateau. The trek combines adventure, nature, wildlife, and authentic Himalayan culture.
Day 1: Leh to Rumtse
After breakfast, drive from Leh to Rumtse. On the way, visit Thiksey and Hemis monasteries. Continue through scenic valleys and reach Rumtse by afternoon. Spend the rest of the day acclimatizing and enjoy a peaceful evening in your campsite.
Day 2: Rumtse to Kyamar (4383m)
Begin your trek with a gentle walk along a dirt trail past a Tourist Bungalow. The route leads through a barren valley with small rivers, abandoned army shelters, and wide grazing meadows. Camp at Kyamar near a shepherd’s settlement.
Day 3: Kyamar to Tisaling via Kyumur La & Mandalchan La
Start climbing gradually towards Kyumur La (4870m) with views of colourful mountains and wildflowers. Descend to a stream, then ascend to Mandalchan La (4996m). From the pass, trek down to the wide grazing fields of Tisaling. Overnight camping.
Day 4: Tisaling to Pangunagu (Tsokar Lake)
An early start takes you over Shibuk La (5016m), after which the stunning view of Tsokar Lake appears. Descend gently to Pangunagu and camp near the lake. Spot Himalayan wildlife like kiangs (wild donkeys) and migratory birds.
Day 5: Pangunagu to Nuruchan (4500m)
Walk along the lakeshore and follow a motorable road towards Nuruchan village. The terrain is mostly flat with open landscapes and distant mountain views. Camp near the river close to the village.
Day 6: Nuruchan to Rachungkaru via Dundunchan La
Ascend gradually to Dundunchan La (4712m), then descend towards Rachungkaru. This high-altitude pasture is home to Changpa nomads and Pashmina goat herders. Experience their unique lifestyle in the mountains.
Day 7: Rachungkaru to Gyamalhoma via Kyamayur La & Gyama La
A challenging trekking day crossing two passes – Kyamayur La (5125m) and Gyama La (5100m). Enjoy panoramic views of surrounding peaks and valleys before descending to the campsite at Gyamalhoma.
Day 8: Gyamalhoma to Korzok (Tsomoriri Lake)
Follow a gentle stream and hike up to Korzok Pass. From the top, witness a spectacular view of Tsomoriri Lake. Descend to Korzok village and camp near the lake shore.
Day 9: Tsomoriri to Leh
After breakfast and a short walk along the lake, drive back to Leh via Mahey Bridge and Chumathang hot springs. Arrive in Leh by evening.
