District Six was a multi working-class area just off the center of Cape Town, to the south of the Castle. Today it is an almost vacant lot, shown on maps as the suburb of Zonnebloem. Before being torn apart by the apartheid regime during the sixties and seventies, District Six, was an impoverished but lively community of 55 000,people of color. This inner-city area harbored a rich cultural life in its narrow alleys and crowded tenements. After its demise, the district became mythologized, as a rich place of the South African imagination, inspiring novels, poems, jazz and the blockbuster musical, by David Kramer and Taliep Petersen, District Six. The latter being an ex resident.It was named the sixth district of Cape Town in 1867. Originally established as a community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, laborers and immigrants. From District 6, we will travel to Langa township, Langa is a native Xhosa name for sun. Once we get here, our tour will start off at Guga Sthebe arts and cultural center in the Langa township. Guga Sthebe is dedicated to the empowerment of the people of Langa Township and improving their socio economic hardships. Here people are trained in several art forms as metal work and pottery. There is a community theatre and people can join the dance, craft and art lessons and regular exhibitions expressing local and international art. From Guga Sthebe arts center, your local tour guide will then take you on a walking tour around Langa township. On the walking tour, your guide will be explaining to you about the birth of Langa, the present and the future. Social challenges as well as triumph. You will also have an opportunity to visit local residence's homes, local traditional brewery, children's home and even an African initiated church (only on Sundays) just to observe and learn.
