SALTEÑA — A MORNING FAVOURITE

Begin with a salteña, one of Bolivia's best-known baked pastries, filled with a rich and juicy savoury filling.

Salteñas are strongly associated with the morning, and this stop gives us a chance to talk about how certain foods become part of a city's daily routine.

A vegetarian option is available.

RELLENO DE PAPA — A STREET STALL WITH A STORY

A crispy potato preparation filled with seasoned meat and vegetables.

We'll visit one of La Paz's best-known street-food vendors, featured in Netflix's Street Food: Latin America, and talk about how a small family-run stall can become part of the city's food identity.

TUMBO JUICE — FRUIT, GEOGRAPHY & EVERYDAY HABITS

Enjoy a fresh glass of tumbo juice, made from an Andean fruit.

This stop is a chance to understand why fresh fruit juices are so common in everyday life and why the relationship between customers and caseras — the women who sell in markets and stalls — can become familiar and personal over time.

CABLE CAR — LA PAZ & EL ALTO IN MOTION

Ride the cable car like thousands of people do every day and see how this public transport system connects La Paz and El Alto.

A WORKING LOCAL MARKET

Here we'll look at how food moves through the city, how small-scale commerce works and why markets remain such an important part of everyday life.

SOPA DE FIDEO — A SIMPLE LOCAL FAVOURITE

Try sopa de fideo, made with fried pasta, peanut-based sauce and either meat or egg.

While we eat, we'll meet one of our regular caseras and talk about how small food stalls become part of neighbourhood routines and family livelihoods.

QUITA PENAS — CINNAMON SORBET

Finish with a traditional cinnamon sorbet known as Quita Penas — “Take Away Your Sorrows”.

It's a simple local treat and a relaxed way to end a morning spent looking at La Paz and El Alto through food rather than only through landmarks.

By the end of the tour, you'll have tried five local favourites, travelled by cable car, explored a working market and understood a little more about the people and routines behind everyday food in La Paz and El Alto.
