What you can expect

Step away from Kyoto’s busy tourist areas and enter a quiet Showa-era home in Nishijin, a historic weaving district where daily life still moves at a gentle pace.

This is not simply a calligraphy class. Shodō is a practice of presence - a way to calm the mind through brush, ink, and breath. Surrounded by tatami and the subtle scent of ink, learn the foundations of Japanese calligraphy: correct stroke order, balance, brush pressure, and the deeper meaning behind kanji characters.

Beginners are warmly welcome. With personal guidance in English, you will first practice basic techniques before creating your final artwork on a traditional hanging scroll. Choose a meaningful character that resonates with you, or have your name expressed in kanji.

Seal your work with a traditional stamp and take home a piece that reflects not only Japanese culture, but your own moment of stillness in Kyoto.

Optional: Visit a 150-year-old Kyoto machiya next door to explore traditional architecture and the cultural history of Nishijin.
