Overview

  • This self-guided walking tour turns Košice's old town into a story you follow at your own pace. Ten stops trace the city's layered history along Hlavná — from Slovakia's largest cathedral and its freestanding bell tower to a musical fountain, a neo-Baroque theatre, a lane of craft workshops and a gun tower from the medieval defences.

    Everything runs from your smartphone. There is no app to download and no physical guide to keep up with: at each stop you get a short audio story, the same account in writing if you prefer to read, an interactive quiz, and map directions to the next location.

    Start whenever you like, pause for a coffee, linger where you want and move on when you're ready. No group, no fixed departure time — just you, the route and about an hour of easy walking. Audio and text are available in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.

Activity itinerary

St. Michael's Chapel (Pass by)

A Gothic chapel built in the 14th century beside the cathedral, on ground that once served as the parish cemetery. Your audio guide explains its role in the old town while you look over the exterior and its carved stonework.

St Elizabeth's Cathedral (Dom Svatej Alzbety) (Pass by)

Slovakia's largest church and one of the easternmost Gothic cathedrals in Europe, begun in the late 14th century. Pause outside to take in the west front, the carved portals and the patterned roof tiles while the audio story plays.

St. Urban’s Tower (Pass by)

The cathedral's freestanding bell tower, rebuilt after a fire with a Renaissance arcaded gallery wrapped around its base. Stone tablets set into the arcade are on view from the square as you pass.

Singing fountain (Pass by)

Slovakia's first musical fountain, set in the park between the cathedral and the State Theatre, with jets choreographed to music. A popular gathering spot on Hlavna and a good place to pause mid-route.

State Theatre Kosice (Pass by)

A neo-Baroque theatre completed at the end of the 19th century, standing at the centre of Hlavna. Take in the ornamented facade and the sculpted detail from the pedestrian street outside.

Sculpture Immaculata - Plague Column (Pass by)

A Baroque column raised on Hlavna in the early 18th century in thanks for the end of a plague epidemic, crowned by a figure of the Immaculata. Look for the saints carved around its base as you pass.

Hrnčiarska ulica (Pass by)

Known as Crafts Lane, this narrow street runs along the line of the medieval town walls and is lined with restored workshops where artisans still work. Walk its length and look into the courtyards as you go.

Miklus Prison (Pass by)

The Executioner's Bastion and the adjoining Miklus Prison form one complex on Hrnciarska, built into the medieval defences of the old town. Pass by the round gun tower and the old prison houses beside it.

Jakabov Palac (Pass by)

A neo-Gothic palace built at the end of the 19th century near the Hornad river by the architect Peter Jakab as his own family home, using stone left over from the cathedral restoration. The final stop on the route.
