What you can expect
Begin your adventure by heading north along the Kohala Coast. Pass by Pu‘ukoholā Heiau, a sacred Hawaiian temple built by King Kamehameha I in the late 1700s. Hear about this historic site’s powerful role in uniting the Hawaiian Islands — a meaningful glimpse into Hawai‘i’s royal past.
Next, stop at the Hāmākua Macadamia Nut Company, a local favorite where you can stretch your legs and sample delicious island-made macadamia nuts in a variety of flavors. Watch how they’re processed, browse the gift shop, and enjoy a true taste of Hawai‘i.
Continue to Hāpuna Beach State Park, known for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Entrance fees are included, and you’ll have Tommy Bahama beach chairs and an umbrella for shade and comfort. Spend about two hours here — plenty of time to swim, sunbathe, or simply relax in paradise.
After the beach, take a scenic drive back toward Kona, passing by dramatic lava fields from Hualālai and Mauna Loa, some within 200 years old — a stunning reminder of the island’s volcanic origins.
If time allows, make an optional stop at the Kona Brewing Company, where you can enjoy a local craft beer or bite to eat before returning to the pier. From there, it’s just a short 5–10 minute walk to the tender boats.
