This private walking tour shows the unique character of Kobe, a city shaped by mountains, sea, international trade, and everyday local life. The route follows the natural flow of the city, moving from the quiet hillside atmosphere of Kitano to the lively streets of Sannomiya, and finally to the open harbor facing the sea.

We begin at Shin-Kobe, walking up to the Kitano-cho area, where foreign merchants lived when Kobe opened its port in the 1800s. Here you’ll see European-style houses and learn how international culture first entered Japan through Kobe.

As we walk downhill, we arrive in Sannomiya, the heart of the city where locals shop, meet friends, and enjoy daily life. We visit Ikuta Shrine, one of Japan’s oldest shrines, and your guide will explain the meaning of shrine architecture, purification rituals, and how these traditions are part of everyday Japanese culture.

We continue through Nankinmachi (Kobe’s Chinatown) with its colorful streets and lively energy. We pass through without stopping long, keeping a natural walking flow toward the sea.

Finally, we arrive at Meriken Park, an open waterfront area with views of the harbor and the iconic Kobe Port Tower. Here, we reflect on the Great Hanshin Earthquake and Kobe’s recovery, and enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze to end the tour on a memorable note.

This experience is relaxed, personal, and flexible. Your guide adjusts the route and pace depending on your interests, whether they include culture, history, architecture, or photography. A warm and meaningful introduction to Kobe.
