What you can expect
Experience Kita-Kamakura at one of its most beautiful times of year on a guided walk through colorful Zen temples, mossy gardens, quiet lanes, and peaceful forest scenery.
Meet your guide outside JR Kita-Kamakura Station and begin at Engakuji, one of Kamakura’s most important Zen temples and one of the area’s celebrated autumn destinations.
Walk through the historic temple grounds as red, orange, and golden leaves frame the grand Sanmon Gate, traditional halls, stone paths, ponds, and forested scenery.
Discover the history of Zen Buddhism and learn how Kamakura developed as Japan’s samurai capital while enjoying one of Kita-Kamakura’s classic autumn landscapes. Engakuji is officially listed among the area’s autumn foliage spots and is located just one minute from Kita-Kamakura Station.
Continue through the quieter streets of Kita-Kamakura toward Meigetsuin.
Known for its elegant temple scenery and famous circular window, Meigetsuin offers a more intimate contrast to the spacious grounds of Engakuji. In autumn, seasonal leaves, bamboo, stone features, and traditional architecture create a calm Japanese landscape. Its rear garden also has a seasonal autumn opening.
Continue through peaceful local lanes toward Jochiji, a smaller Zen temple surrounded by greenery.
Walk along its mossy approach and discover traditional gates, stone lanterns, Buddhist statues, and quiet forest scenery. Jochiji ranks fourth among Kamakura’s Five Great Zen Temples and offers a more intimate atmosphere between the tour’s larger temple complexes.
Between the temples, enjoy narrow lanes, residential streets, trees, stone walls, and seasonal scenery that preserve Kita-Kamakura’s relaxed atmosphere.
Finish at Kenchoji, the highest-ranking of Kamakura’s Five Great Zen Temples and one of the most important Zen monasteries in Japan.
Walk through its impressive Sanmon Gate and historic temple grounds while seeing Buddhist halls, traditional architecture, gardens, and autumn foliage.
The contrast is the heart of the experience: grand Zen temples, intimate mossy paths, quiet local streets, traditional gardens, and brilliant autumn colors—all connected in one walk through Kita-Kamakura.
Your guide can help take natural travel photos using your own smartphone or camera, but photography is a supporting part of the experience rather than the main focus.
Autumn foliage is a natural seasonal phenomenon. The timing and intensity of the colors vary each year depending on weather and temperature and cannot be guaranteed.
