We pick up your group at your hotel in Shimoda at about 08:30. Your English-speaking driver-guide (Hindi and Urdu also available) drives you north to Shuzenji. From there you follow, stop by stop, the road walked by the student in Yasunari Kawabata's famous story 'The Dancing Girl of Izu'. Kawabata later won the Nobel Prize. Your guide tells the story as you travel, so you feel the book along the real road.
About 09:45 - Shuzenji onsen town (about 1 hour). Walk to Shuzenji Temple, see the Tokko-no-yu spring by the river and the bamboo path. This is where the student starts his trip.
About 11:15 - Joren Falls (about 40 minutes). A 25 m waterfall in deep forest, with wasabi fields beside the river.
About 12:00 - Lunch near Amagi (own cost). Fresh wasabi soba is a local choice.
About 13:00 - Old Amagi Tunnel (about 40 minutes). A stone tunnel from 1905 and an Important Cultural Property. In the story, the student meets the dancers near here. We walk through it.
About 14:00 - Kawazu Seven Waterfalls path (about 1 hour). A walk down the river past several falls to the bronze statue of the dancer and the student.
About 15:15 - Kawazu Loop Bridge. A short photo stop at the double spiral road bridge.
About 16:30 - Back at your hotel in Shimoda.
On the day you can make the waterfall walk shorter or swap the order of the stops.
This is a private tour. Only your group.
If the Old Amagi Tunnel road is closed or unavailable on your date, your driver-guide takes you to a similar place nearby instead. The tour price does not change. If you prefer, we can instead walk the Amagi forest path to Joren Falls for longer.
