Begin your adventure with a visit to the Calanais Standing Stones, a site older than Stonehenge. Marvel at the ancient stones and learn about their history and significance. With a gift shop, café, toilets, exhibition and the Stones themselves, this is an amazing stop to step back in time and discover the Outlander in you. To visit the Stones involves a 5 minute walk on a paved path at a slight incline
Next, head to the Blackhouse Village at Gearrannan. Discover how people used to live in these traditional stone houses and gain insight into the island’s past. Complete with a cafe, gift shop, toilets and 2 converted houses to museums, this is an amazing look at how we used to live. There is no significant walking involved.
Continue to the Dun Carloway Broch, a well-preserved Iron Age structure. Explore the site and imagine what life was like for its ancient inhabitants. There is a small exhibition which is free and toilets. The walk to the Broch is around 7 minutes, on a rough path, at an initial incline levelling off.
Visit the Norse Mill and Bru Sheilling, two more historic sites that offer a glimpse into the island’s rich history. This site is a 5 minute walk over a rough path.
