On this eventful morning, we will explore the best-preserved volcano on the island of Ischia. From the Castiglione Thermal Park in Casamicciola, we will hike along the flank of the Rotaro volcano through the green, fragrant pine groves of the “Bosco Della Maddalena.” Along the way, we will immerse ourselves in the 1,000-year history of the volcano by taking a closer look at the rocks along the trail. They tell us about the volcano's active period. We will pass a parasitic crater and a volcanic dome on our way to the volcanic crater. Along the way, we come across a fumarole field. Feel for yourself the warm gases that rise relentlessly from within the earth. On a walking tour of the volcanic crater, we will finally get a glimpse of its mighty, rocky and also very green interior. The tour ends at a typical Ischian country estate near Fiaiano.

Geologist's tip: You shouldn't miss the fumaroles of Rotaro under any circumstances. These are points where gases escape in volcanically active areas. On Ischia, they mainly consist of water vapor and a small amount of CO2. Hold your hand over the holes in the ground and experience the rising heat and the different temperatures they can reach!
