What you can expect
Our adventure begins at Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active and historically feared volcanoes. After its massive eruption in 1104, Europeans called it “The Gateway to Hell,” a reputation that only grew after the 1341 eruption, when people claimed to see birds flying through the flames—believed by some to be the souls of those condemned to eternal punishment. Even today, legends say Hekla remains a gathering place for witches and dark forces.
If you dare, join us for an exhilarating Super Jeep ascent up this famous volcano. As we climb, we scan for mythical “signs” of these gatherings while enjoying sweeping panoramic views over Iceland’s highlands and the South Coast.
Continuing toward Laugavegur—Iceland’s most iconic hiking trail—we follow rugged F-roads that merge with parts of the trail itself. We pass by well-known mountain huts such as Álftavatn and Emstur, surrounded by colorful mountains, black sands, and raw highland beauty.
Next, we visit the breathtaking canyon Markarfljótsgljúfur, believed to have been carved out in a single catastrophic glacial flood from Katla volcano beneath Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Driving alongside the powerful Markarfljót river, with Þórsmörk and the Eyjafjallajökull glacier rising dramatically to the east, is a highlight in itself.
We end our Super Jeep journey in Fljótshlíð, a peaceful farmland rich in history and the setting of the famous Njáls Saga. Here you’ll experience authentic Icelandic countryside at its finest—calm, scenic, and steeped in centuries of stories.
Discover colorful rhyolite mountains, steaming geothermal areas, vast black-sand deserts, dramatic canyons, mighty glaciers, powerful volcanoes, and breathtaking waterfalls—all in one unforgettable journey.
