What you can expect
The starting point of this varied mountain tour is Geitau train station near Bayrischzell (a meeting point in Munich can also be requested if desired). From there, the trail initially leads leisurely through meadows and forest towards the Wendelstein. The ascent gradually becomes steeper, but is rewarded again and again with beautiful views of the Leitzach Valley and the surrounding peaks of the Bavarian Prealps. Via the Panoramaweg, you will finally reach the summit area of the Wendelstein at an altitude of 1,838 meters, where an impressive 360-degree panorama of the Alps opens up.
There is plenty to discover at the summit: the highest church in Germany, the Wendelstein Church, is located here. Right next to it is the distinctive meteorological station, which can be seen from far away. The Wendelstein Cave, one of the highest show caves in Germany, is also located at the summit. The Wendelstein can also be reached without a long hike via the historic Wendelstein Railway from Brannenburg and the Wendelstein Cable Car from Bayrischzell. At the top, there are also several places to stop and have something to eat or drink.
We plan a break of about an hour at the summit to enjoy the view, take photos or have a leisurely meal. Those who want to can also end the hike here and, at their own expense, either take the cable car to Bayrischzell or the historic cogwheel train to Brannenburg to descend into the valley.
The descent then leads back towards Geitau along varied trails – first along alpine paths and later through forests and alpine pastures. Overall, the tour, with a distance of around 12 kilometers and an elevation gain of over 1,000 meters, offers an athletic but very rewarding day trip with an impressive mountain backdrop in the Bavarian Alps.
