What you can expect
The starting point for this varied mountain hike is Geitau train station near Bayrischzell (if desired, a meeting point in Munich can also be arranged). From there, the trail initially leads at a leisurely pace through meadows and forest towards the Wendelstein. The climb gradually becomes steeper, but it is continually rewarded with beautiful views of the Leitzach Valley and the surrounding peaks of the Bavarian Prealps. Following the Panorama Trail, you will finally reach the summit area of the Wendelstein at an altitude of 6,030 feet (1,838 meters), where an impressive 360-degree panorama of the Alps unfolds before you.
There is plenty to discover at the summit: the Wendelstein Church, the highest church in Germany, is located here. Right next to it stands the distinctive meteorological station, which can be seen from far away. Also located at the summit is the Wendelstein Cave, one of the highest show caves in Germany. The Wendelstein can also be reached without a long hike via the historic Wendelstein Railway from Brannenburg and the Wendelstein Cable Car from Bayrischzell. At the top, there are also several options for stopping for a bite to eat or a drink.
We plan to take a break of about an hour at the summit to enjoy the views, take photos, or have a leisurely meal. Those who wish can also end the hike here and, at their own expense, descend into the valley either by cable car to Bayrischzell or by the historic cogwheel train to Brannenburg.
The descent then takes you back towards Geitau along a variety of trails – first along alpine paths and later through forests and alpine pasture. Overall, with a distance of around 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) and an elevation gain of over 1,000 meters (3,281 feet), this tour offers a challenging but highly rewarding day trip amidst the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Bavarian Alps.
