What you can expect
Discover the medieval town of Altamura, built during the Holy Roman Empire. Enter the historic center through Porta Matera, one of the city’s ancient gates, and be captivated by the architectural beauty of the Church of Saint Biagio, a small gem with a sober and intimate charm, and the Church of Saint Nicola dei Greci, linked to the ancient traditions of the Greek community.
Our guided tour continues with a visit to the Cathedral of Altamura, an imposing example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, the only church built by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the Middle Ages. The façade, elegant and majestic, is characterized by a refined rose window and two slender bell towers overlooking the square. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its spaciousness and brightness, featuring rich decorations, finely crafted altars, and valuable works of art that tell the history and spirituality of the place.
Continue your walk through the charming squares and cloisters of the old town. These courtyards once had a defensive function, trapping potential invaders. Today, the cloisters are evocative places to explore, where you can find small houses, artisan workshops, and spaces rich in history. The peaceful atmosphere and timeless architecture allow you to fully experience the medieval character of Altamura.
The pleasant walk concludes among the characteristic squares of the old town, leading you through the fragrant narrow streets in search of old wood-fired ovens, where bread and focaccia are still baked today.
