Travel along the Roman Dere Street—the ancient main road into Scotland—to the border town of Jedburgh. Enjoy free time to roam its narrow streets, visit the ruins of the Augustinian Abbey, and learn about how the landmark was a great symbol of power during the 12th century. Your next stop is at Carter Bar, a beautiful, high-altitude border crossing between Scotland and England that has been the site of battles between Celts and Saxons and Brits and Scots throughout history.

Continue through the rolling moorlands and forested hills of Northumberland National Park on your way to Hadrian’s Wall. Stop at Steel Rigg to walk along the remains of the fortification, and imagine what life was like for the Roman soldiers stationed in this remote corner of the empire.

After a brief lunch break, make your way to Birdoswald, 1 of the wall's best-preserved Roman forts. Spend some time exploring the multi-layered evidence of this site's long and storied past, including Roman ovens and granaries, Dark Age buildings, a medieval tower house, and 16th-century home. Your return ride through the Southern Uplands and Scottish Borders to Edinburgh includes a stop in the Victorian-era spa town of Moffat.
