Leave Porto behind and enjoy a scenic drive through the Portuguese countryside as you head to Guimarães, renowned for being the birthplace of the Portugal. The city is a fine example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town. It has iconic landmarks that date back to the 15th century, such as the Guimarães Castle, and it won the 2012 European Capital of Culture award.
