Meet Sophie — Your Host

Sophie was born in Sichuan, one of China's most celebrated food regions, and moved to Guangzhou more than ten years ago. She married, raised her family, and built her life here — Guangzhou is now her second hometown.

That double identity is what makes her table interesting. Her cooking brings together the bold, layered flavors of Sichuan and the delicate, ingredient-led style of Cantonese cuisine. It's a combination that exists in family kitchens across China but almost never on a restaurant menu.

Sophie has also travelled widely across Southeast Asia — she lived in the Philippines for over a year and has visited Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. Those years abroad shaped how she hosts: curious about where you're from, comfortable across cultures, and genuinely interested in the conversation.

Location

Sophie's home is in Xiang Hai Bi An, a residential community in Nansha District — a comfortable neighbourhood where you'll see how local families actually live, well away from the crowded tourist areas. Over the meal, expect conversation about Chinese food culture, family traditions, daily life in Guangzhou, and Sophie's own recommendations for local places and hidden gems worth your time.

Before your visit, we'll confirm your dietary preferences and send step-by-step directions to the home including phone number and WeChat so you won't get lost. Two days before, you'll receive our Home Dining Cheat Sheets — a beautifully designed cultural primer on Chinese dining that answers the questions most foreign guests have before their first home dinner in China.

Language

Note on language: Sophie speaks native Mandarin and basic conversational English. Communication at the table is warm and works well, and we'll make sure you have everything you need in writing before you arrive.
