What you can expect
Begin your adventure at the bustling shoreline of Gili Trawangan. Step onto the glass-bottom boat and notice the “window to the sea” built into the floor. As the boat pulls away from the pier, the turquoise water transitions into a deep sapphire, and through the glass, you can see the white sandy bottom transform into jagged coral landscapes.
Stop at Turtle Point, the first snorkeling spot, and slip into the warm, buoyant water. Be greeted by the silence of the underwater world. Spot a majestic sea turtle gliding effortlessly through the water or resting on the seabed. Watch them surface for air, a serene experience that reminds you of the delicate balance of nature.
Move toward the coast of Gili Meno—the quietest of the three islands—and reach the most photographed underwater site in Indonesia. See a hauntingly beautiful circle of 48 life-sized human figures interlocked in a ring. Created by sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, these statues are not just art; they are pH-neutral artificial reefs designed to encourage coral growth.
From the glass-bottom boat, the circle looks like a mysterious sunken city. Once you dive in, swimming among the statues feels like exploring an ancient ruin. Schools of bright yellow damselfish and blue tangs weave between the stone limbs, creating a living masterpiece.
The final leg of the snorkeling journey takes you toward Gili Air. This island is known for having the most diverse fish populations and stunning “Blue Coral” (Heliopora coerulea). See massive mounds of coral shaped like brains and fans. Often, the guides will provide a bit of fish food, causing a “fish storm” where hundreds of Sergeant Majors and butterflyfish surround you in a whirlwind of color. Through the glass floor of the boat, those staying on board can see the frenzy in high definition.
Between stops, you can sit on the roof or the deck, feeling the salty breeze and sun, while the captain navigates through the shimmering “Gili Blue” waters. As you conclude the tour and head back to Gili Trawangan, the experience leaves you with a deep appreciation for the ocean.
