What you can expect
Discover the vibrant world of traditional Sri Lankan batik at Shermila Batiks, a family-run workshop established in 1990. For over three decades, our family has preserved and shared the island's rich batik heritage, with the second generation proudly continuing this unique artistic tradition.
Located in the peaceful village of Koggala, just a short drive from Galle, our workshop offers an authentic opportunity to explore one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated handicrafts. Visit our factory and gallery to admire a beautiful collection of handcrafted batik clothing, scarves, wall art, and home décor, each piece carefully created using traditional techniques and inspired by Sri Lanka's nature and culture.
Your journey begins with a guided tour of our working batik factory. Watch skilled local artisans transform plain white fabric into colourful works of art using the centuries-old wax-resist dyeing technique. Learn each stage of the process—from sketching the design and applying hot wax to hand dyeing, boiling, and the final reveal that brings every masterpiece to life.
After discovering the craft, it's time to create your own. Under the guidance of our experienced batik artists, you'll design, wax, and dye your own batik artwork using traditional tools and techniques. This interactive workshop allows you to experience the creativity, patience, and craftsmanship behind every handmade batik.
As your artwork dries, relax with light local refreshments while exploring our gallery and learning more about the history of Sri Lankan batik and our family's journey.
At the end of the workshop, you'll take home your own handmade batik creation—a meaningful souvenir and a lasting reminder of your time in Sri Lanka.
Whether you're passionate about art, interested in local culture, or simply looking for a unique and meaningful activity, this workshop offers an unforgettable journey into Sri Lanka's living artistic heritage through creativity, tradition, and warm family hospitality.
