Step into the colorful world of Sri Lankan batik at Shermila Batiks, a family-run workshop in Koggala, near Galle, established in 1990. For more than three decades, our family has preserved and shared the art of batik, with the second generation now proudly continuing the tradition.
This is more than a visit to a batik shop—you will become part of the creative process and make your own traditional Sri Lankan batik.
Begin with a warm welcome and an introduction to the story of our family workshop and the traditional wax-resist batik technique. See how skilled artisans transform plain white fabric into colorful handmade designs through sketching, waxing, dyeing, boiling, and the final reveal.
Then it is your turn to create.
Choose from available designs or create your own simple idea, then sketch it onto your fabric with guidance from our experienced batik artisans. Learn how to carefully apply hot wax using traditional tools before moving on to the dyeing process.
Watch your design gradually come to life as you discover how wax and color work together to create the distinctive patterns of batik. Continue through the final stages of the process, including removing the wax to reveal your finished artwork.
No previous art or batik experience is needed. Our family and artisans will guide you step by step, making the workshop suitable for beginners, couples, families, solo travelers, and anyone interested in Sri Lankan art and culture.
During the experience, enjoy light local refreshments and take time to explore our small gallery, where you can see handcrafted batik clothing, scarves, wall art, and other pieces created using traditional techniques.
At the end of the workshop, take home the batik you created yourself—a unique handmade souvenir and a personal memory of your time in Sri Lanka.
Come not only to see Sri Lankan batik, but to experience the tradition, meet the people behind the craft, and create a piece of it with your own hands.
