Funchal is the capital of Madeira island. It has hills as a backdrop and is known for its port, gardens and wine cellars of Madeira. The centuries-old Cathedral of Funchal, with mixtures of Gothic and Romanesque styles, is remarkable for its carved wooden ceiling. In front of the port, is the Fortress of St. James, built in the seventeenth century. Now it houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, with a vast collection of Portuguese works.
