The first settlers had already discovered the 695-meter-high summit for themselves. One of the few springs gushes forth from the rock at an altitude of 460 m above sea level.
In the past, these places were considered sacred, as the spring ensured the survival of both humans and animals. This is evidenced by the numerous bone finds from the area, which now provide insights into life long before the island was conquered. The view as far as the southern tip of Punta Jandía and the magnificent view over the little-known hinterland are impressive. When visibility is clear, the southern peninsula of Jandia can be seen beautifully.
The destination of the hike is the Chapel of the Virgin of El Tanquito, which you reach after an hour. Carved into the volcanic rock, the small pilgrimage chapel at 460 meters above sea level comes as a surprise. Every year at the beginning of June, the Procession of the Virgin is organized here, and hundreds of locals celebrate their saint.
On all other days of the year, hardly anyone uses the hiking trail, which is why this tour remains an insider tip for those seeking peace and quiet. Especially during the autumn and winter months, you will repeatedly discover plants on Mount El Cardón that are supplied with moisture by the clouds carried by the trade winds and offer unique contrasts.
You will not reach the summit on this guided tour, as the last few meters consist of highly weathered terrain and there is no trail.
Let your tour guide share the stories of this fascinating place with you and discover the beauty of the Holy Mountain of El Cardón.
Visit the fascinating rock chapel and enjoy a picnic in a small group of no more than 12 people.
The tour is suitable for participants aged 9–75 years. No off-road experience is needed. Normal physical fitness is required, as the route involves hiking up and down a trail.
It is important to wear sturdy, closed shoes with a firm grip, as the ground is made of gravel.
