What you can expect
Step into Kawagoe — Tokyo's beloved “Little Edo” — and explore a 400-year-old merchant town through the eyes of a local who knows exactly where to eat, what to taste, and which corners tourists walk straight past.
On this intimate 3-hour walking tour (maximum 6 guests), you'll sample four Kawagoe specialties that most visitors never discover:
A freshly made sweet potato dessert — the definitive taste of Kawagoe, perfected over generations
A warm golden dango from the legendary Kashiya Yokocho candy alley
A shrimp cracker takoyaki sandwich — a one-of-a-kind Kawagoe invention you won't find anywhere else in Japan
A savory bite at Torisei, a beloved local spot your guide's relationships with the owners make possible
The Route
The tour begins at Seibu Hon-Kawagoe Station and winds through the city's most iconic streets. Walk the Kurazukuri District — Kawagoe's historic Edo-era merchant quarter, where black-walled storehouses line stone-paved streets that have barely changed in three centuries. Stand at the foot of the Toki no Kane Bell Tower, a landmark that has rung every hour since 1624 and remains the symbol of the city. Stroll through Kashiya Yokocho, the legendary candy alley that has delighted locals since the Meiji era. Then pause at Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine — not just for the view, but for the story behind it that most guidebooks leave out entirely.
Why This Tour Is Different
With a maximum of just 6 guests, this is never a crowded bus tour. It's a conversation with a local, moving at your pace, stopping wherever curiosity takes you. Your guide has spent years building relationships with the shop owners and restaurant families who define Kawagoe's culinary identity — relationships that open doors, and dishes, that solo travelers simply cannot access.
We visit places tourists walk straight past. We eat where the locals eat.
