Wander the ancient Daibutsu Trail kissing moss-covered shrines and serene temples, culminating in the awe-inspiring Great Buddha.
Your private (native English) guide will meet you in your Tokyo hotel lobby at your chosen morning hour. Relax as you journey south to Kamakura, the former samurai capital and a beloved coastal escape. In about one hour, you’ll arrive at Kita-Kamakura Station, where your scenic adventure begins on the enchanting Daibutsu Trail.
The trail winds through serene forests and sacred sites, offering a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustle.
(Optional) Your first stop is Jōchiji Temple, the fourth of Kamakura’s five great Zen temples. Once a grand religious complex, it’s now a tranquil haven of mossy gardens and gentle bells. Explore its main hall, home to a sacred trinity of Buddhas, and follow the path through bamboo groves, caves, and ancient gravestones. Don’t miss the nearby “well of Kamakura,” one of the city’s ten famous wells; a perfect spot for quiet reflection.
Further along lies Kuzuharaoka Shrine, a delightful shrine devoted to love and matchmaking. Locals and visitors alike come to pray for romantic blessings, tying heart-shaped ema plaques with handwritten wishes. Within the grounds, you’ll find the enmusubi-ishi: stones said to help one find true love. On a clear day, the shrine’s hillside perch even reveals a distant, breathtaking view of Mount Fuji.
(Optional) A short detour brings you to Genjiyama Park, home to a striking bronze statue of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the shogun who founded Kamakura’s first samurai government.
Halfway through the hike awaits one of Kamakura’s most captivating sites: Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine. Hidden within a rocky grotto, this mystical Shinto-Buddhist shrine invites visitors to wash their money in its sacred spring; a ritual believed to multiply one’s fortune. Soak in the spiritual atmosphere, then unwind with a cup of fragrant green tea at a traditional teahouse nearby.
The final stretch of the trail leads to Hase, where you’ll enjoy a well-earned lunch at a cozy local restaurant (price not included).
After lunch, visit Kōtoku-in Temple, home to the magnificent Great Buddha of Kamakura, a towering bronze statue of Amitābha dating back to the 13th century. Step inside the hollow interior to see centuries-old inscriptions left by pilgrims, and feel the serene power of this timeless icon.
Afterward, you can enjoy free time: wander Hase’s main street for souvenirs, relax at a seaside café, or stroll the nearby beach. Alternatively, take the charming Enoden tram to Kamakura Station and explore Komachi Street, lined with shops and traditional sweets.
Return comfortably to your Tokyo hotel between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., depending on your pace and choices. All travel costs, temple & shrine entry fees, and guide services are included. Meals, drinks, and souvenirs are additional.
