What you can expect
During the Kamakura period, Kamakura was Japan’s political and cultural center. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu served as a spiritual anchor and symbol of samurai society, with over 800 years of history. Today, it remains a cultural icon and attracts about 2.5 million visitors during New Year’s hatsumode, ranking among Japan's top pilgrimage sites.
Komachi Street, stretching 360–600 meters from Kamakura Station to the shrine, is a lively shopping street with about 250 shops offering traditional goods, trendy fashion, and local treats like shirasu dishes, dumplings, and croquettes. It blends historical charm with modern energy, making it a must-visit for tourists.
Hasedera Temple, founded in 736, is one of Kamakura’s oldest temples. It houses a 9.18-meter Eleven-Headed Kannon statue and offers stunning views over the city and Sagami Bay. Visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers like cherry blossoms, peonies, hydrangeas, and autumn leaves, along with adorable Jizo statues throughout the grounds.
Kōtoku-in is renowned for housing the famous Great Buddha of Kamakura, a bronze statue of Amida Buddha that stands approximately 13.3 meters tall and weighs around 121 tons. It is one of Japan’s most important Buddhist statues and has been designated a National Treasure. Visitors can not only admire the statue’s impressive exterior up close but also enter inside to observe its internal structure. The temple is surrounded by a tranquil environment with distinct seasonal beauty, especially known for its cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage.
The main attractions of Enoshima include the over-1,000-year-old Enoshima Shrine, the scenic observation tower Enoshima Sea Candle, the historic Enoshima Iwaya Caves, and the Samuel Cocking Garden, which offers pleasant walking paths. On clear days, you can even enjoy a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji from high vantage points. In addition, the surrounding area features bustling shopping streets, cafés, and restaurants serving fresh seafood and local specialties, making it an ideal place to experience the charm and lifestyle of the Shonan Coast.
