What you can expect

Begin your journey with a stop in Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Jvari Monastery, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views over the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Then, explore the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of the most important churches in Georgia.

Next, head to the Shio-Mgvime Monastery, an ancient complex founded in the 6th century by St. Shio, one of the 13 Assyrian Fathers. Discover the caves and a church built into the cliffs, surrounded by peaceful nature. Enjoy the quiet atmosphere, ideal for reflection or a picnic.

Visit the main church, built in the 11th century over an earlier 6th-century structure. Admire its modest and simple architecture, blending with the rocky surroundings. Inside, see frescoes, though many are damaged or faded with time.

Explore St. Shio’s Cave, a narrow cave where St. Shio spent his final years in complete solitude. Pilgrims often visit this cave for prayer and reflection.

See the surrounding cliffs dotted with caves and monk cells, used for hermitage. Some are accessible by a short walk or hike, providing scenic views.

Admire the refectory and bell tower, built during the monastic revival periods (especially in the 11th–18th centuries).

On your way back, stop at a restaurant in Tbilisi or near Mtskheta for an early dinner.
