Visit to Rila Monastery & Rila Mountains

Enjoy a scenic drive through the beautiful Rila Mountains to reach the magnificent Rila Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Bulgaria. Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, the monastery is famous for its colorful frescoes, striped arcades, rich history, and unique atmosphere.
If you have booked the guided option, enjoy a guided tour of the Rila Monastery complex. Learn about Saint John of Rila (Saint Ivan Rilski), the founding of the monastery in the 10th century, and its importance for Bulgarian culture and Orthodox Christianity.

Your guide will explain the symbolism of the famous frescoes, the miraculous icons, and the sacred relics kept inside the monastery church.

After the guided tour, enjoy free time to explore the monastery courtyard, take photos of the stunning Rila Mountain scenery, visit souvenir shops, and have lunch. Dining options around the monastery are limited, so we recommend bringing food from Sofia.
