Day 1: Ride from Chimborazo Highlands to Salinas
Begin your journey early in the morning with a departure from Riobamba, driving into the high Andean landscapes of the Chimborazo region. Meet your expert guides and well-trained horses near Arenal at the edge of the high paramo. After introductions and a safety briefing, saddle up and begin a 4–5-hour ride through varied highland terrain with spectacular views of Chimborazo and the surrounding mountains.
Your route traverses grassy slopes, volcanic outcrops, shallow valleys, and traditional Andean landscapes, offering chances to see local wildlife and experience the rhythms of rural mountain life. At midday, arrive in the picturesque Andean town of Salinas, where lunch awaits and you have time to explore this community with your guides. In the evening, enjoy dinner at your lodging in Salinas and rest in a local hostel or community accommodation, surrounded by highland tranquility.
Day 2: Ride to Hot Springs and Return to Riobamba
After breakfast on Day 2, prepare for another memorable horseback ride across the Andes. Spend roughly another 5 hours in the saddle, heading toward the Chimborazo thermal springs, locally known for their warm volcanic waters and scenic mountain backdrop. This section of the ride offers new perspectives of the paramo and deepens your connection to the region’s landscapes, culture, and equestrian traditions.
Once you reach the thermal springs, have time to soak your muscles and relax in the warm pools maintained by the local community of Río Colorado — a perfect way to conclude your highland ride. Afterwards, return by vehicle toward Riobamba, stopping for a late lunch at Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge before arriving back in town, where the tour concludes.
