Meet your guide in Riga and travel to Gauja National Park, where your kayaking adventure begins. After a short introduction to the equipment and safety procedures, set off to discover Gauja National Park from its most natural perspective—the river itself. Explore the most scenic section of the Gauja River Valley, where spectacular Devonian sandstone cliffs, formed more than 350 million years ago, rise above the winding river and ancient forests.
Depending on river conditions and the group’s experience, the route usually combines the majestic Gauja River with one of its wilder tributaries, creating a more varied and immersive experience. Beginning on a smaller tributary and continuing onto the Gauja, you’ll paddle through both wide, open river sections and narrower, forested passages, where changing river conditions add an extra sense of adventure and discovery.
More than simply renting a kayak, you’ll explore with an expert local nature guide who shares engaging stories about the valley’s geology, wildlife, culture and traditions of Latvia. Designed as a small-group experience (typically up to 4 guests, maximum 8), the tour offers a relaxed pace, the flexibility to adapt throughout the day, and a more personal connection with both the landscape and your guide.
This is an active yet accessible soft adventure. The standard route covers around 20 km (5–6 hours of paddling), while a shorter 12 km option is available for a more relaxed experience. No substantial previous kayaking experience is required, but you should feel comfortable paddling and spending several hours on the water.
After reaching the finish point, enjoy a comfortable transfer back to your accommodation in Riga, or choose to stay in the beautiful town of Sigulda to continue exploring Gauja National Park at your own pace.
