What you can expect
Your adventure begins with pickup from your accommodation in Puebla, setting off toward the historic city of Cholula, a place rich in history, tradition, and vibrant culture.
The first stop is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the largest pyramid in the world by volume. Built over centuries by different Mesoamerican civilizations, this impressive structure remains an important symbol of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic heritage. Walk around its expansive plateau, admire the ornate church perched on top, and take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. (Note: The archaeological site is closed on Mondays and Thursdays, so on those days, the visit will be from the outside.)
After exploring the pyramid, continue to the Church of Santa María Tonantzintla, one of the most extraordinary Baroque-style chapels in Mexico. This small yet stunning church is famous for its highly detailed, indigenous-inspired interior, where every inch of the ceiling and walls is adorned with elaborate carvings, gold leaf, and colorful imagery reflecting a fascinating blend of pre-Hispanic and Catholic traditions.
Next, head to a traditional pottery studio, where you’ll have the chance to taste locally crafted artisanal spirits, including eggnog (rompope) and other regional liqueurs. Here, you’ll also witness handmade pottery techniques passed down through generations, offering insight into the region’s rich artisan heritage.
Your final stop is the brilliantly colorful Church of San Francisco Acatepec, an architectural masterpiece renowned for its stunning Talavera-tiled façade. The intricate mosaics covering the church’s exterior shimmer in the sunlight, showcasing Puebla’s iconic ceramic artistry. Step inside to explore its beautifully decorated interior, filled with religious artwork and delicate details.
After a day filled with history, culture, and stunning sights, relax as you return to Puebla with drop-off at your preferred location in the city.
