Inebriated by the beauty of the top of Sameiro mountain, Fr Martinho thought of erecting a monument there to perpetuate the triumph of Mary Immaculate and the memory of the Dogmatic Definition of the Immaculate Conception. A pedestal was erected in 1863. A sculpture of the Immaculate Conception was placed on it, cut from a block of marble by the sculptor Emídio Carlos Amatucci.
