Day 1: Farap Border – Ancient Merv – Mary
Meet and greet at the Turkmen side of the Farap (Alat) border. After border formalities, drive toward the historic Merv Oasis, a key Silk Road center. Enjoy views of the desert landscape and traditional Turkmen settlements.
Stop for lunch at a teahouse in Bayramaly, then explore Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, the Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala fortresses, the Askhabs Mausoleums, and the ancient hammam and sardoba. Climb Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala for panoramic views. Transfer to Mary for hotel check-in and overnight stay.
Day 2: Mary – Ashgabat City Tour
After breakfast, depart for Ashgabat across the Karakum Desert, observing rural life and oases along the way. Upon arrival, check in and rest briefly.
Begin an afternoon city tour: visit Old Nisa (UNESCO), the ancient Parthian capital; the National Museum of Turkmenistan; and Turkmenbashy Ruhy Mosque. Time permitting, see the Independence Monument, Neutrality Monument, and Ertugrul Gazi Mosque. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and spend the evening at leisure exploring Ashgabat. Overnight in Ashgabat.
Day 3: Ashgabat – Darvaza Gas Crater
Journey into the Karakum Desert, stopping at the Water Crater and Mud Crater. Continue to the Darvaza Gas Crater, the “Gates of Hell.” Witness sunset over the burning crater and enjoy a BBQ dinner nearby. Spend the night in a traditional yurt camp under the stars.
Day 4: Darvaza – Dashoguz – Shavat Border
Early morning visit to the crater to watch the sunrise. Return for breakfast, then drive to Dashoguz. Enjoy a farewell lunch before transferring to the Shavat border. End of tour.
