Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands in the southern Aegean Sea, approximately 200 kilometers south of Greece's mainland.
It is the most active volcanic center in the Aegean Arc, though it is mostly a caldera today. The Venetians gave it the name Santorini in the 13th century as a tribute to Saint Irene. It was previously known as Kallisti, Strongili, or Thera.
Santorini is the world's only inhabitable Caldera (volcano cauldron). Unlike other Greek islands, the towns and villages sit densely on top of the Caldera's massive cliffs, resembling snow on the towering mountain peaks from a distance. The colored layers of the volcanic rock of these cliffs are spectacular in their own right: cocoa brown, rust red, yellow ochre, white, and cream.
