What you can expect
Your day begins at the historic Kera Kardiotissa Monastery, a peaceful sanctuary run by nuns and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. Inside, you can admire the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary along with beautifully preserved frescoes and religious artworks dating back to the 14th century.
From there, the journey continues into the heart of the Lassithi Plateau, one of the few inhabited highlands in the Mediterranean, set at over 800 meters above sea level. Encircled by the Dikti Mountains, the plateau is home to 18 traditional villages, iconic windmills, and the old Venetian ditches once used to drain the fertile land. As you approach the plateau, you will pass the old Minoan windmills; although stopping is not permitted, the bus slows down so you can capture photos of this unique landscape.
Your next highlight is the legendary Cave of Zeus (Dikteon Cave), located near the village of Psychro. Known in mythology as the birthplace of Zeus, the cave offers a blend of natural beauty and ancient lore. A short uphill walk leads you to its entrance, where impressive stalactites and stalagmites create a mystical atmosphere. This stop enriches your understanding of the region’s deep mythological roots and complements the cultural journey across the plateau.
In Psychro, you’ll also experience the village’s long tradition of handmade ceramics. A visit to a local pottery workshop offers insight into the craftsmanship that has shaped the area’s identity for generations.
Your final stop is Tzermiado, the largest and oldest village on the plateau. With its traditional architecture, sweeping mountain views, and serene atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to unwind. Enjoy free time to explore, take photos, or relax in a local tavern. For lunch, you can choose from authentic Cretan dishes prepared with fresh, locally grown vegetables—Lassithi is famous for its produce, and the flavors reflect the region’s rich agricultural heritage. Preordering your meal ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience.
On the way back, the tour includes a stop at a traditional olive oil factory near the foothills of the Lassithi area. Here, you will learn how extra virgin olive oil is produced and taste high‑quality olive oil along with other local products before returning to your drop‑off point. Reflect on a day filled with history, mythology, craftsmanship, and the timeless beauty of Crete.
ℹ️ Important Information
If the Dicteon Cave is closed for maintenance, the visit will be skipped.
Extra time will be added to the remaining stops to ensure a full and enjoyable experience.
