The Vouga Valley Line, better known as the Vouga Line and nicknamed the Vale das Voltas Line, in reference to its winding route, was a railway section that connected the Northern Line to the Dão Line, stretching 140 km.
Planning for it began in 1877 with the aim of transporting the abundant agricultural produce from the Vouga Valley to Greater Porto, and it was finally inaugurated on February 5, 1914, establishing the long-awaited rail link between Espinho and Viseu.
The first trains to run on the Vouga Line were steam locomotives with wooden wagons and carriages. Later, the line was served by railcars, which continued until it was decommissioned in 1990 (between Sernada do Vouga and Viseu). It is remembered as one of the most beautiful railway lines in Portugal, climbing from the coast to the mountains on a winding route of curves, tunnels and bridges, cutting through valleys and hills of lush, rising greenery.
On this bike tour, we invite participants to ride about 75 km downhill through fields, vineyards and oak trees, with fabulous views of the Vouga River Valley, ending in Sernada do Vouga.
After being picked up in Coimbra by car, we head to the city of Viseu for the start of the tour. After getting ready and receiving a briefing for the route, participants set off on their bikes. We will accompany them along the entire route.
At the end, in Sernada do Vouga, we'll be waiting for you to bring you back to Coimbra.
