What you can expect
An immersive and interactive 900-square-meter space dedicated entirely to the world of Belgian fries and their star ingredient: the potato.
The Frietmuseum Brussels is a fun, educational, and gourmet museum that offers a journey through the history, culture, and traditions of this iconic Belgian dish. Through over 1,600 collection items, vintage posters, interactive games, films, and testimonials from frituristi (fry shop owners), you’ll learn not only about the history of the potato but also about the evolution of the French fry over time, as well as the secrets to cooking it perfectly.
Spanning three floors, the audio-guided tour (available in 11 languages) begins in Peru, the birthplace of the potato, before taking you on a journey around the world to trace the history of its cultivation in South America and Europe.
Halfway through the tour, you’ll head to Frietland, a space dedicated entirely to Belgian fries. Here, traditions, folklore, and delightful anecdotes reveal the full art of the Belgian fry. The tour concludes with a tasting of authentic Belgian fries, prepared according to the traditional methods. In exchange for your audio guide, you will receive a cone of fries cooked either in traditional Belgian beef fat or in vegetable oil.
Visitors can capture their visit by taking a photo of themselves in a chip shop, on a tractor during the potato harvest, or next to XXL specialties.
Whether you’re a foodie, curious about history, or simply a fan of good fries, the Frietmuseum in Brussels is a destination not to be missed. It celebrates a symbol of Belgian culture and reminds us that behind every crispy fry lies a fascinating story!
