Enjoy an authentic experience with real families from the floating islands of Uros, direct descendants of the ancient settlers of Lake Titicaca. This sightseeing tour will allow you to get to know their way of life, their customs, and their ancestral language up close, on a journey full of history and cultural connection.
The adventure begins with pickup from your hotel and a boat ride to the Uros Islands. During the trip, the tour guide shares information about the lake, its species, its legends, and the meaning of the name Titicaca, setting the mood to discover one of the most iconic places in the Peruvian highlands.
Upon arrival at the first island, you will be greeted with a greeting in the Aymara language by the president or local representative. Here you will learn how the islands are built through a real totora model, where the locals explain — in their native language — every detail of the process; the tour guide translates into Spanish and English so that everyone understands.
Then, the families invite visitors to enter their homes, share a moment with them, and dress in the typical Uros costume to take pictures and enjoy a unique cultural experience.
Afterwards, there is time for local handicrafts and souvenirs, where visitors can directly support the families by purchasing handmade products.
At the end of the visit, there's the option of a horseback ride or a trip on a totora catamaran, a traditional boat made entirely from the plant that gives life to the islands. This ride is optional and takes you to the second island, although those who prefer can continue on the main boat.
On the second island, there is a different atmosphere, with local cafes, shops, and restaurants where you can enjoy a fresh trout ceviche or fried trout, typical dishes of the lake. Here you can see the contrast between traditional family life and the more touristy part of the community.
Guests can also choose to continue on to a third island, known as the Totora Museum (not included in the package cost). This place was created by two elders of the community, who made bird sculptures and a replica of the first Uros raft, a symbol of the history of this floating village.
Finally, you return by boat to the main harbor, and from there visitors can return to their hotel or to downtown Puno.
