Hike the famous Etna Volcano and visit the site of a recent massive volcanic eruotion. See the eruptive fracture of Bottoniera and other volcanic features. Explore the volcano and learn more about its history and the geomorphology of the area from an alpine and volcanological guide on this daytime trekking tour.
Start the hike is along the dirt road that leads from Piano Provenzana to the summit craters of the volcano, and cross the eruptive fracture of the eruption of October 27, 2002, the route of “Monte Nero-Timpa Rossa”.
Discover and study the many volcanic morphologies associated with the eruptions on the northern side of Etna. Visit the flank eruptions of September 10, 1911 and June 17, 1923 that threatened the town of Linguaglossa.

Reach the wonderful and impressive Timpa Rossa Refuge, nestled in a fantastic birch forest. Take a picnic break and for the more experienced try to reach the Grotta dei Lamponi.

Stop at the volcanic morpho structures called Hornitos, the name coming from the Spanish “Little Furnace”. Travel along the pyroclastic cones of the 2002 eruption until reaching the maximum altitude of 2100 meters on the rim of the craters. Climb a sandy channel to the starting point in Piano Provenzana.
