What you can expect

  • Escape the energy of central Tokyo and discover the peaceful mountain landscapes of Okutama on this guided cultural cycling tour.
Just 90 minutes from the city, Okutama feels like another world. We begin at Trekkling, located only 2 minutes from Okutama Station, before riding along a historic mountain road once used by local villagers transporting timber and charcoal between remote communities. Today, this quiet route offers a rare glimpse into traditional rural Japan.
Cycle through peaceful mountain villages and forested valleys as your guide shares stories of the area’s history and culture. Visit a small shrine nestled among tall cedar trees, where travellers once prayed for safe journeys through the mountains.

Stop at a clear natural spring where fresh water flows from the hillsides. Beside the spring you will see traditional wasabi fields cultivated in cold, running water. Here, enjoy freshly grated local wasabi served with roast beef — a clean, aromatic flavour completely different from standard paste.

Continue to a scenic suspension bridge spanning the valley before riding toward Lake Okutama, a vast mountain reservoir surrounded by dramatic ridgelines and deep green forests. The open lake views provide a striking contrast to the narrow historic road.

From mid-April to the end of May, the mountains glow with vibrant fresh green leaves. Spring is especially beautiful in Okutama, as newly emerging foliage blankets the valleys in brilliant colour — a refreshing escape from Tokyo’s urban landscape.

The pace is relaxed with regular stops for photos and explanations.
