1. Lalbagh Botanical Garden
   240 acres laid out by Hyder Ali in 1760 and filled by Tipu with trees from Africa and Persia. At its heart, a granite outcrop three billion years old, passed by joggers every morning, entirely unbothered.

2. Bull Temple
   A Nandi from the 1500s, carved from a single boulder, four metres tall and black with centuries of oil. Farmers still bring the first groundnuts of the harvest each November

3. Bangalore Fort
   The Delhi Gate and a stretch of wall — a mud fort rebuilt in stone by Hyder Ali, breached by Cornwallis in 1791. Most of the city walks past without looking up

4. KR Market
   Built over that battleground, now one of Asia's great flower markets. Marigold and jasmine by the sackful, sold by weight

5. Lunch at MTR
   Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, feeding Bangalore since 1924. The rava idli was invented in this kitchen during wartime rationing. Mondays: Andhra banana-leaf at Nagarjuna

6. Vidhana Soudha
   Four storeys of Bangalore granite, finished in 1956 in a style invented for the occasion — part temple, part parliament

7. High Court of Karnataka
   Attara Kacheri, “eighteen offices” — red-washed and columned, 1868, facing the Vidhana Soudha across Cubbon Park. Two centuries of power, face to face
