See the outstanding building designed by the world-renowned architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser – the Forest Spiral (Waldspirale). Enjoy the city famous for its Art Nouveau architecture, and see the city's landmarks: the artists’ colony Mathildenhöhe, founded by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hessen, and the Wedding tower, which was given as a wedding present to the Duke in 1905. From the 19th century onwards, Darmstadt became a hub for research and tech companies, like its high-tech centre near Frankfurt’s airport known for its use by the European Space Agency. The “City of Science”, as it calls itself since 1997, also counts with the presence of many titans of the chemical, pharmaceutical IT, biotech, telecommunications and mechatronics industries. It is without a doubt a place to wonder at how far Germany and Europe have gone, from the Middle Ages to the Space Age.
