What you can expect
Discover one of La Palma’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes by exploring the Cueva de Las Palomas volcanic tube with a certified local guide.
The experience begins with a walk along a footbridge over the lava flow created during the eruption of the San Juan volcano in 1949. As you make your way through this stunning volcanic landscape, your guide will explain how the lava flows were formed, how lava flows during an eruption, and how volcanic tubes are created within the lava flows. From here, you can also see the volcanic ridge of Cumbre Vieja, one of the most active volcanic systems in the Canary Islands.
Gradually, we will approach the entrance to the cave. Before entering, you will be provided with a helmet and a headlamp to ensure your complete safety during the visit. As you pass through the entrance, you will enter a fascinating underground world formed by solidified lava, where you can observe various textures, shapes, and structures created by the movement of magma during the eruption.
During the tour, you will discover how nature finds a way even in this volcanic environment. Plant roots penetrate several meters of lava in search of water, creating striking formations inside the tube. You will also get to see the small animal species that have adapted to this dark and stable ecosystem.
The interior of the cavern maintains a cool temperature and a quiet atmosphere that allows you to appreciate every detail of the volcanic landscape. Cueva de Las Palomas is the youngest volcanic tube open to the public in the Canary Islands, and it is still evolving, making a visit a unique opportunity to discover the world hidden beneath a lava flow.
A fascinating experience to understand the power of volcanoes and get up close and personal with La Palma’s volcanic nature.
