Overview

After retiring from banking, I discovered the arts of calligraphy and seal carving, which gradually transformed my life. My work has been recognized with prestigious awards at the Seoul Women's Craft Exhibition and the KT Corporate Competition.
For the past 18 years, I've been teaching calligraphy at a women's professional education institute supported by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Since January 2018, I've had the privilege of introducing Hangul and Korean traditional culture to over 3,000 international visitors at my studio in Insadong. I also conduct traditional culture workshops for international corporations.
I published “The Strength of Calligraphy” in 2018 and “Hello World!” in 2024. This book is a collection of memories and experiences from seven years of becoming with wonderful guests from a stranger to a closer.

Activity itinerary

Hello, I'm Jeongju Welcome to my calligraphy workshop, where you'll discover more than just beautiful writing—you'll experience the meditative joy of traditional Korean brush calligraphy. This peaceful activity offers a chance to slow down, relax your mind, and immerse yourself in Korean culture. I'll guide you through the process, introducing you to traditional calligraphy materials and teaching you mindful brush techniques. You'll start with practice sessions focusing on basic strokes and Hangul characters. Then, you'll practice your names in 2 versions in writing. Next you can practice your own personalized scroll with a meaningful message. At last you are going to create your your own personalized scroll in Hangul. To add an authentic touch, you can choose to embellish your work with a traditional stamp that I'll provide. When you return home, your handcrafted Hangul calligraphy scroll will serve as a unique reminder of your Seoul experience. This scroll is perfect for traveling If you're interested in exploring more of Korean traditional culture, I welcome you to visit my studio in Insa-dong. One of the highlights of my vacation in Seoul was taking this class. I enjoyed every second of the class and felt relaxed and creative. The ambiance is perfect and I learned so much in during my time in the class. It was a bit magical and creating my own scroll to bring home is something I cherish quite a bit. I highly recommend this activity to individuals (solo traveler), groups, families and friends.

Calligrapher Kim was knowledgeable, warm, and very patient. Her skill in calligraphy was excellent and she helped us understand what we were doing. She showed me how to change the spacing and the size of the words depending on the meaning.

This calligraphy class with Helen is a wonderful way to spend a couple hours in Seoul. You learn about the South Korean language and its design in a chill studio. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was able to make a nice looking scroll. This experience fits in perfectly before a nice night out in Seoul.
