What you can expect
What could be nicer than going to the zoo on a quiet, sunny afternoon with your family, partner or even on your own?
At the foot of the Nordkette mountain range, above the rooftops of Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, lies the Alpine Zoo at an altitude of 750 meters. Around 2000 Alpine animals of around 150 species are kept in natural enclosures, terrariums and aquariums on just over 5 hectares. No other zoo in the world has such a complete collection of wild animals from the Alpine region. This is just one reason why a number of world-first breeds and remarkable breeding successes have been achieved here.
FACTS
The Alps are home to a wide variety of habitats within a small area: valleys with diverse cultural landscapes, lakes, rivers, floodplains, moors, intra-Alpine heat islands, deciduous, mixed, and coniferous forests, alpine meadows, and even glacial regions. In addition, there are significant regional differences depending on rock type, topography, and microclimate. This is why the Alps boast an astonishing diversity of life. It is estimated that 30,000 animal species (primarily insects) and 4,500 higher plant species are native to the Alps. At the Alpine Zoo, we can only showcase a small fraction of this enormous biodiversity. These are primarily vertebrates: approximately 20 of the 80 mammal species, 60 of the approximately 200 alpine bird species, 11 of the 15 alpine reptile species, 6 of the 21 alpine amphibian species, and nearly all fish species found in the Alps. In total, the Alpine Zoo is home to approximately 2,000 individuals.
