What you can expect
Explore Chester Zoo, the UK's best zoo, and a global conservation charity committed to creating a better future where wildlife can survive and thrive.
Every corner of Chester Zoo is filled with incredible animals, immersive habitats, and unforgettable experiences.
Open year round it’s the perfect day out for visitors of all ages. A great place for families to enjoy time together outdoors, connecting with the natural world, while helping to protect nature for the future. From towering giants of the savannah to tiny species that play a vital role in our ecosystems, there are so many animals to discover and learn about at Chester Zoo.
'Heart of Africa' encompasses 22 acres of grasslands inspired by the sights, sounds, and tastes of Central and East Africa, with carefully selected plants and shrubbery to reflect the vast range of landscapes found there. With over 50 incredible animal species, from critically endangered vultures to porcupines, aardvarks, and pygmy mice, as well as giraffe, zebra, antelope, and ostrich roaming together in the vast, sweeping savannah habitat. There are more than 30 stunning bird species to see, including flamingos and the colourful black-cheeked love birds. Hidden Savannah has some of Africa’s smallest species, from chameleons, pancake tortoises, and a colony of naked mole rats.
'Madagascar: Lemur Walkthrough' lets visitors come face to face with 4 free-roaming, endangered and critically endangered, lemur species, including ring-tailed lemur, white-belted ruffed lemur and crowned lemur.
Snow leopards, Yashin and Nubra, can be spotted amongst the rocky terrain of their specially designed Himalayan inspired habitat. In June 2025, the pair gave birth to Bheri, the first ever cub to be born at the zoo.
'Islands' recreates the amazing tropical environments of South East Asia, including the Lazy River Boat and Monsoon Forest, the UK’s largest tropical biodome, home to Sumatran orangutans, Sunda gharial crocodiles, rhinoceros hornbills and a range of free-flying bird species.
Chester Zoo’s award-winning botanical gardens are home to thousands of plants, including 5 national collections, with an array of colours and smells that will transport you around the world.
Chester Zoo is fully accessible and offers free daily animal talks, children’s play areas and shopping opportunities. Food options include Sunday lunch at the zoo’s classic gastropub, The Oakfield, authentic South East Asian street food on Islands, plus tasty snacks from kiosks located around the zoo. There are also picnic areas for visitors who bring their own packed lunch.
Every ticket, cup of coffee from our onsite kiosks or cuddly toy purchased in our gift shop funds vital conservation work that helps some of the world's most endangered species thrive.
