A morning on Etna built around two things that most tours skip: the stories behind what you're looking at, and the views that open up along the road on the southeast slope as you ascend.
We start with pickup from Catania city center. The minivan takes the scenic route to the volcano, and the guide starts talking even before arriving on Etna. Not a rehearsed speech, but something more like a story: geology, local history, myths, the way ordinary life in Sicily has always revolved around the mountain.
Bove Valley
The first stop is on the edge of the Bove Valley, a vast natural depression about 7 km wide that formed approximately 64,000 years ago when two major eruptive centers collapsed. The view from the rim is one of the best on the entire mountain: the black lava floor below, the outline of the crater above, and the Ionian coast stretching out into the distance. The guide explains what you are looking at and why it is important for understanding how Mount Etna really works.
The lava tube cave
A short detour inside a lava tube cave, formed when molten rock made its way underground, leaving a hollow tunnel as it cooled. About 30 minutes inside, with the guide explaining how these caves are formed and what role they have played in the lives of the communities that have always lived in the shadow of Etna.
Hiking at 2,000 meters
This is where you get out and walk. About a 75-minute walk among the Silvestri Craters, formed in the 1892 eruption, and across the lava fields left by the 2001 and 2003 eruptions. No technical gear required, no extreme elevation changes. The landscape up here looks like another planet, and the views of Catania and the Ionian Coast from this altitude are something you won't soon forget.
A break with a view
A short stop at the refreshment area at 2,000 meters before heading back. An opportunity to sit down, enjoy the panorama and recover from the walk at your own pace.
Return to Catania
The minivan takes you back to the starting point. From departure to arrival, the tour lasts 5.5 hours. You will return to Catania in time for lunch.
