Caracol is the tallest mayan structure standing at a height of 1600 feet above sea level, Caracol meaning (snail). Caracol is also located about 25 miles of the town of San Ignacio in the foothills of Chiquibul Forest Reserve in West Belize. Caracol was the largest Mayan city in Belize and hold 150,000 thousand people more that what Belize has in todays date. Caracol's settlement history dates back atleast to the early Pre-Classic (1000-800 B.C.) with monumental structures commencing in the late Pre-Classic (300 B.C.-200 A.D.).
