What you can expect

  • On the southern coast of Peru, just a few hours from the bustling capital of Lima and very close to the city of Pisco, lies one of the most unique and dramatic ecosystems on the planet. Here, the extreme aridity of the coastal desert abruptly collides with the icy and exuberant immensity of the Pacific Ocean. It is at this meeting place, where sedimentary rock cliffs plunge into the turquoise sea, that one of South America's most captivating trekking experiences takes place: the Golden Shadows Trek.

This route, which has become hugely popular in recent years among photographers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers, is not a high-mountain challenge or an extreme test of physical endurance. On the contrary, it is an easy to moderate hike of approximately 1.5 hours that takes place at the most magical time of day: sunset. Its name is not just poetic license; it describes a real optical and geographical phenomenon. As the sun descends toward the ocean horizon, its rays strike the dunes, salt flats, and rock formations at a low angle, casting long shadows and bathing the arid landscape in shades of gold, amber, ochre, and fire. It is a visual spectacle that transforms an inhospitable environment into a living canvas of epic proportions.
